Using Brazen Lies to Trick Us into Higher Taxes
The local option sales tax slogan was “A Penny for Pavement”!
5th grade math is all that was needed to understand that adding 1% to the 7% sales tax is more than a 14% increase in the tax.
Most of the money was not to be spent on pavement. What little money that WAS to be spent on pavement was mostly for new roads, not fixing pot holes and resurfacing existing roads. They let the roads get run down on purpose so as to create an EXCUSE to raise taxes. Then IF they had gotten the new taxes they had planned to use it to hire their cronies to interfere in our lives and businesses- BIGGER GOVERNMENT, NOT BETTER ROADS. The 14.3% sales tax increase would have been the largest tax ever proposed. The tax on gasoline is supposed to repair the roads.
The state has the money to repair its roads in each county but the money is being spent in other areas of the state. Gov. Haley has stated “We don’t have to raise taxes to do it. The money is there to repair our roads.”
The fraudulently named “Penny for Progress” scam
used tax money to promote higher taxes.
In Lexington County, SC Alliance Consulting Engineers received a NO PUBLIC BID CONTRACT from the County of Lexington. Alliance was paid $450,000 to promote the tax, before the election. Alliance was promised 10% of the projects that were to be funded by the tax. The projects that were to be funded by the tax were estimated to be 300 MILLION DOLLARS. Leaders at Alliance made campaign contributions to politicians who promoted the tax, and to politicians who approved the NO PUBLIC BID CONTRACT from the County of Lexington.
ILL GOTTEN GAINS are subject to be forfeited to the taxpayers. If politicians took money from a business in exchange for lucrative contracts, then that money might be ILL GOTTEN GAINS. We must investigate the possibility that revenue from the seizure of ILL GOTTEN GAINS might be enough to maintain the roads.
